Gourmet Café Cheese Spot: Cabot Creamery
If you’re looking for a place where you can find great tasting cheese as well as a guided tour of the cheesemaking process, then make a stop at the Cabot Creamery in Cabot, Vermont.
Let’s start with the taste; Cabot has won the prestigious award, “World’s Best Cheddar,” by the World Championship Cheese Contest, which is referred to as the “Olympics of Cheesemaking,” and not once, but twice in the past decade.
To give you an idea of how renowned and serious this contest is, the recent contest had 1,785 entries from 25 different states and 18 different countries.
Nineteen judges representing nine different countries awarded the prize based on best flavor, body, texture, finish, and packaging. Along with their cheddar award, they also won four other cheddar trophies as well as a second prize for their salted butter and a tied-fourth place honor for their unsalted butter.
Cabot Creamery president commented on the awards, “Winning these awards highlights the dedication of both our farmer owners and our employees in a collaboration that transforms great milk into the finest quality cheeses… It is indeed an honor to have the world’s best dairy judges select our cheese as the “World’s Best Cheddar” for a second time in less than a decade.”
You can visit their Cabot Cheese website and order some of their award winning cheeses, or even better, stop by the creamery and get a guided tour.
Their tours include a bit of history about the area, a look into their cheesemaking process, and a chance to taste their famous cheeses. The cost is a mere $2.00 per person over the age of 12. You can visit their website for hours of operation and directions: Cabot Cheese.
